Bendery Fortress
Bendery Fortress, also known as Tighina Fort, is one of the most impressive and historically rich fortresses in Moldova. Located on the banks of the Dnjester River in the city of Bender, this fortress stands as a reminder of centuries of military conflict and strategic importance. Built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire, the fortress played a key role in the region’s history — from defending against invaders to being the site of major battles between powerful empires.
History and significance
endery Fortress was built in 1538 under the rule of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, as part of a larger network of defensive towers along the Dniester River. The fortress was designed to protect the Ottoman border from invasions and served as a strategic stronghold during conflicts with the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire.
During the Russo-Turkish wars, the fortress was repeatedly besieged and became the scene of fierce battles. In the 18th century, it came under Russian control and was further fortified and expanded. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of Moldova’s complex history and is a popular tourist destination.
A historic stronghold on the Dnjestr
Bendery Fortress was built in the distinctive Ottoman style, with thick stone walls, bastions, and towers that still reflect the strength and durability of its construction. The fortress has a trapezoidal layout and consists of both an inner and outer citadel, each capable of being defended independently.
Within the fortress walls, you’ll find historical structures such as an old mosque and former military barracks. Today, the site houses a museum that highlights the history of the fortress and the surrounding region. Visitors can also climb the watchtowers for panoramic views of the Dnjester River and the city of Bender.
