A word class underground wine city: Cricova Winery

Cricova Winery is famous for its impressive underground cellars and exceptional wines. With a tunnel network stretching over 120 kilometers, Cricova offers a truly unique and fascinating experience for wine lovers and tourists alike. This underground wine city is located just 15 kilometers from Chișinău.

Cricova Winery – a historical treasure

Founded in 1952, Cricova has grown into a national symbol of Moldovan winemaking. In 2003, it was officially recognized as a Cultural National Heritage Site of the Republic of Moldova — a tribute to its major role in the country’s wine industry and cultural legacy.

The underground cellars of Cricova

Often referred to as an “underground city”, the cellars of Cricova lie 60 to 80 meters deep, offering perfect conditions for aging wine: constant temperatures between 12–14°C and 97–98% humidity. These tunnels, originally carved out as limestone mines, are now named after the wines they store — think of streets like “Cabernet Street” and “Chardonnay Boulevard”.

Unique wine collection

Cricova is home to an impressive collection of over 1.3 million bottles of wine, including rare and vintage selections. The oldest bottle in the collection dates back to 1902. One of the most remarkable stories is that part of the collection once belonged to Hermann Göring and was brought to Cricova after World War II.

Production and specialties

Cricova produces a wide range of wines, including sparkling wines made using the traditional method. A true standout is their red sparkling wine “Codru”, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It’s known for its rich, velvety texture and deep flavors of blackcurrant and cherry.

Sustainability and innovation

In recent years, Cricova has invested in sustainable energy sources such as solar power and enhanced insulation, resulting in a 25% reduction in energy costs. These efforts are part of a growing movement among Moldovan wineries to operate more eco-consciously and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
