The Emergence of Transnistria as a “De Facto” Independent State

The rise of Transnistria as a de facto independent state dates back to the early 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. When Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union, tensions arose between the Moldovan government and the people of Transnistria, where a large Russian-speaking population felt threatened by growing nationalism in Moldova and plans to make Moldovan the official language.

In 1990, Transnistria declared itself an independent republic, which led to an armed conflict between Moldova and the region in 1992. Russia provided military support to Transnistria, resulting in a ceasefire and the creation of a buffer zone. Although no country officially recognizes Transnistria, it has since operated as a self-governed region with its own government, currency, military, and even a flag featuring Soviet symbols.
